Strengths:
The Eighteen Inch Earthwise Mower has good coverage with an 18 inch cutting area, and can be set for several different cutting heights (from 1.5 to 3.75 inches in 3/8 inch increments). The wheels and hand grip are excellent – they offer superior traction and comfort. One of the best features of the mower is its compact storage. The handle folds down neatly in two parts – it’s hinged in the middle so that the handle folds over itself across the base of the mower. Due to this folding action, the mower can be stored underneath other tools without any wasted space! The mowing height is also easy to adjust, with a spring loaded lever.
Weaknesses:
The Earth Wise mower only has an 18 inch cutting area (that’s ~254 square inches). It takes about 15% longer to mow a yard with an 18 inch mower than a 20 inch mower (with ~314 square inches).
Technical Details:
A quick note about Extension Cords
The longer the extension cord you use, the more energy is lost in transmission. Thin cords can also heat up dangerously. When using long extension cords, it’s important to make sure that the wire is thick enough to safely and efficiently conduct electricity. Wire thickness is often referred to as “gauge”. Thicker wires have a low gauge, and thin wires have a high gauge.
For this mower, it’s important to use a 14 gauge (or thicker) wire for extension cords up to 50 feet. For longer extension cords, please use a 12 gauge (or thicker) extension cord. Thicker wires are generally more expensive, but they can save substantial amounts of electricity, which saves money in the long run.
Assembly
There is little to no assembly required for this mower. It comes pre-assembled in the box, and all you have to do to use it is unpack the mower, then unfold the handlebars and tighten them in the desired position.
An optional side discharge can be fitted to the mower if you are cutting tall weeds or if you prefer your mulch to be coarser. Putting the discharge in doesn’t require tools. Just raise the access port and slide the discharge chute into place. There are 2 retaining tabs that fit through slits in the discharge and help keep it in place.
